Definitions

The Brundtland Commission Report, 1987

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

This definition originates in the 1983 meeting of the Brundtland Commission and is probably the most often quoted definition of sustainable development. It was published as a book (Our Common Future) in 1987. An electronic version of the Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development is also available as a UN resolution.
